Famous for being the birthplace of the Industrial Revolution, the West Midlands is a county in the heart of England, and it’s the place I was born and grew up in. I was born in the former leather-making capital of the world, Walsall, and have lived in Wolverhampton, where 90% of the world’s locks and keys were once made.
Also known as the Black Country (due to the black smoke that used to blanket the region in the Victorian era), most of the furnaces, foundries, and factories have long since closed and become museums, and historical landmarks, or have evolved into modern workplaces and homes.
The West Midlands is also packed with picturesque countrysides dotted with stately homes, an extensive canal network that’s bigger than Venice’s, and modern, vibrant cities flourishing with diversity and culture.
