The Rainbow Nation surprised me when I traveled there on a month-long backpacking tour of southern Africa in early 2022. All too aware of the negative press, we decided to ignore the naysayers and see South Africa for myself.
We drove around the north-east of the country and through two landlocked countries (Lesotho and Eswatini), camped in the middle of nowhere, and trekked the incredible Drakensberg mountains (including reaching the top of the world’s highest waterfall). We stayed overnight in a safari park, chilled beside penguins on the beach, and made friends with some amazing locals.
I can tell you from this trip, I had the most incredible time, and will most definitely be visiting again. And I urge you to see South Africa for yourself! Below are some of the guides and articles I wrote following my truly memorable experience.
